At Screenly, we use CharlieHR to manage our team—track birthdays, work anniversaries, leaves, and more. While it’s a great tool for internal HR operations, we saw an opportunity to take it one step further: what if this information could be visualized on our signage screens in real time?

A Developer’s Journey: Cracking the Integration

When I first dove into CharlieHR’s API docs, it seemed like direct integration wasn’t possible without going through one of their listed API service providers. That didn’t fit our goal of a secure, self-contained solution.

So I reached out directly to the CharlieHR team—and they were incredibly responsive and helpful.

After several rounds of testing and research, I found a way to use CharlieHR’s client ID and secret directly, without relying on external API gateways. This meant we could build a truly independent and efficient Edge App that pulls live employee data securely. You can find the code for the app here. Please give a star if you like it!
